Mukteshwar Dham: the temple on top of the ridge

Things to do14 Sep 2026Updated 28 Sep 2026By the The Rare One’s team, Tapovan

Mukteshwar takes its name from Mukteshwar Dham, the Shiva temple at the highest point of the ridge, at about 2,300 metres. For most visitors it’s the first stop, and for good reason: the climb is short, the setting among old trees is beautiful and the view is enormous.

A little history

The temple is centuries old; it is often described as around 350 years old, and local tradition ties the site to Shiva himself. The name means “lord of liberation”. It remains an active place of worship, so treat it as a temple first and a viewpoint second.

Getting there

The temple is about 9 km from The Rare One’s. Drive to the base in Mukteshwar town, then climb the stone steps through the trees to the top. It takes 10 to 15 minutes at an easy pace; take it slowly, as you’re well above 2,000 metres.

What you’ll see

  • A small, whitewashed shrine to Shiva, with brass bells hung by devotees
  • Views down over the valleys and, on clear days, the snow peaks to the north
  • Monkeys, so keep food inside your bag

When to go

Early morning is quietest and clearest, and the light is best for photographs. On Mahashivratri, weekends and holidays expect crowds and queues at the steps.

Temple etiquette

Dress modestly, remove your shoes where asked, and keep voices low inside the shrine. Photography inside the sanctum may not be allowed.

Next door: Chauli ki Jali

A few minutes’ walk from the temple is the cliff of Chauli ki Jali, with its viewpoint and rock climbing. Combine both in a morning, add the Bhalu Gaad waterfall in the afternoon, or take our Mukteshwar sightseeing day with a cab and driver.
