Sitla, Peora and the villages around Mukteshwar

Things to do24 Sep 2026Updated 28 Sep 2026By the The Rare One’s team, Tapovan

Mukteshwar sits in a web of small villages strung along the ridges, many of them with old stone bungalows from the British era, apple and plum orchards, and forest trails between them. If you have a spare morning, they’re some of the most peaceful places in Kumaon to wander.

Sitla

At around 6,000 feet, Sitla is a tiny settlement known for its colonial-style bungalows, forest trails and views towards the high Himalaya on clear days. It’s a good place for an unhurried walk under oak and pine, with birdsong for company.

Peora

Peora is a village of terraced fields and old bungalows, some of them now homestays. It’s a pretty drive, and a good stop for a cup of tea and a walk through the fields.

Nathuakhan

A remote village that shows rural Kumaon as it is: slate-roofed houses, terraced farms, and people going about their day. Visit quietly and ask before photographing people or homes.

Chaukhuta

Our own village, where The Rare One’s sits in the forest. It’s the starting point for the walk to Bhalu Gaad waterfall.

Ramgarh

A little further, the orchard country of Ramgarh has blossoms in spring and fruit in summer. See Ramgarh, the fruit bowl of Kumaon.

How to explore

  • The roads between villages are narrow and winding; drive slowly and give way to local traffic.
  • A local driver or guide makes the day easier and helps with directions.
  • Carry cash: small shops rarely take cards.
  • Buy local where you can: honey, jams, woollens and seasonal fruit.

For more ideas, see things to do in Mukteshwar, or ask at reception and we’ll suggest a route for your day.
