Mukteshwar is a year-round hill station, but each season feels completely different. At well over 2,000 metres it is noticeably cooler than Nainital and far cooler than the plains. Here is what the weather is like, season by season, so you can pick your dates. Once you’ve chosen, here’s how to get here.
October to November: the clearest views
After the monsoon washes the air clean, autumn brings the sharpest views of the snow peaks and crisp, sunny days. Days are pleasant; nights turn properly cold by November, so pack a warm jacket. This is our favourite time of year, and the best season for photographs of the Himalaya.
December to February: winter and a chance of snow
Days are cold and bright, and nights drop close to or below freezing. In some years Mukteshwar gets snow, usually between late December and February. It is never guaranteed; read snowfall in Mukteshwar before planning a trip around it. Christmas and New Year are busy, so book early. Winter also brings some of the clearest mountain views of the year.
March to April: spring and rhododendrons
The forests turn red with rhododendron (buransh) flowers, fruit trees blossom in the orchards around Ramgarh, and the days warm up. Mornings are still cool. A lovely, underrated season with fewer visitors.
May to June: escape the heat
When the plains cross 40°C, Mukteshwar stays mild, which makes this the busiest season, especially on weekends and during school holidays. The haze of early summer can hide the snow peaks, but the forest is at its fullest. It’s the best time of year for the pool.
July to September: monsoon
The hills turn a deep green and clouds drift through the forest. Heavy rain can cause landslides on the roads, so keep your plans flexible and check the forecast before you drive. For the quiet, the green and the lower prices, read Mukteshwar in the monsoon.
What to pack, whatever the month
