Mukteshwar is one of the higher hill stations within a day’s drive of Delhi, which makes it one of the better bets for a chance of snow in Kumaon. But it is still a chance, not a promise. Here’s how to plan a winter trip that’s good with or without it.
When does it snow?
In years when it snows, it usually happens between late December and February, when a western disturbance brings cold and cloud to the hills. Some winters see several snowfalls; some see none at all. January is, on average, the likeliest month.
Watching for snow
Keep an eye on the forecast for Nainital district a few days before you travel; snow in Mukteshwar usually comes with a spell of rain in the plains. If snow is forecast, message us on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you what it looks like on the ground.
Roads in snow
Heavy snow can close stretches of road for a few hours or a day, especially above Bhowali. Drive in daylight, keep a buffer day in your plans, and don’t push on if the police advise against it. Small cars without good tyres struggle on icy bends; it can be safer to park and wait.
What to pack
- Thermals, a proper down or wool jacket, gloves, a cap and warm socks
- Waterproof shoes with good grip
- Sunscreen and sunglasses: snow glare is strong at this height
- Basic medicines and a power bank (power cuts are more common in storms)
Where to stay in winter
In December and January, a mountain-view room, family room or cottage is warmer than a Swiss camp. Tell us you’re coming for the snow and we’ll suggest the best stay for your dates.
No snow? Still worth it
